Fruits from the Garden and Field. Poetry by M.A, Bacon, designs including cover by Owen Jones, drawn on stone by E. Bateman. Published by Longman's in 1850. The original cover is in excellent condition with some minimal bumps, it is full "relievo" leather or embossed calf over wood and is stunning. The equally superb end-papers are a textured cream paper with gold floral decorations. The page edges are gilt. There are 12 main chromolithographs each of fruit with an adjacent page of poetry (printed in gold), There is also a title page, a contents page and a 'statement' page at the front and at the back there is a page listing contributors to the book and all these additional pages are decorated with what are probably chromolithographs of vine leaves (a total of 4 addtional pages with some illustration on them). Some sold and listed versions of this book have erroneous numbers of illustrations listed. This writer is confident of the numbers of pages listed here as correct. The pages are stiff and thick.
A number of the pages are loose. This is typical of this book as the gutta percha adhesive breaks down. As the pages are otherwise complete, the book has been kept in its original condition. There is foxing to the pages as seen in the photgraphs however the illustrations retain their detail and brilliance of their colour. 185x265x12
