The Art of Music by C. Hubert Parry, rare. The title page indicates this was published in 1894 by Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co. with a pencil addition in Parry's hand above the title saying "the Evolution of". This is significant as the first edition was published in 1893 and the subsequent edition in 1895 with a title which included Parry's annotation. This edition, for which I can find no reference, has a Zaehnsdorf binding and further annotations which make me believe it may be a unique edition.
In ink there is a dedication to "Margot from Maude and Hubert" and in addition on the free front page there is the name "A. Asquith".
1894 is the year Emma known as Margot married the British Prime Minister H.H. Asquith and furthermore one of Margot's children was A. or Anthony Asquith ( A film director). The book was in the possession of Prof Roger Covell who reviewed the arts for the BBC in the early 50's.
Putting this together, this was a one-off edition given to Margot Asquith in the year of her marriage and left to her son, Anthony. Directly or otherwise it then came into the possession of Roger Covell.
The book has the spine replaced but otherwise is in very good to excellent condition. The covers are full leather and other than slight browning to the rough cut block edges it is clean and tight.
The book is likely rare as a unique edition . Its rarity is further enhanced by its fascinating lineage of ownership. It represents a fascinating addition for anyone collecting works of music or British history. 374 pps.155x22x225
